Studio Visit: Kelly Ventura is Inspired by the Everyday Nature of Florals

Michigan-based watercolor artist Kelly Ventura let The Tie Bar into her studio to explore her creative process from start to finish.

Kelly Ventura is an artist based in Michigan who specializes in floral and nature-inspired patterns that can be found on home decor, wallpaper, and a few of The Tie Bar’s floral ties and pocket squares.

We recently took a road trip to Kelly’s studio in Milford to gain inspiration for future collaborations, understand her design process from start to finish, and discuss with Kelly why her art is so important to her.

Get to know Kelly.

KV: Hi, I’m Kelly Ventura. I’m a watercolor artist and surface designer. You can find my patterns on a ton of products from bedding, dinnerware, ties, stationary, wallpaper, textiles — a little bit of everywhere. I have been doing this career for probably about 12 years now and as you can see, a lot of my work is floral and full of color. I do take a lot of inspiration from nature, what’s around me every day, pulling kind of the unexpected things like wild stems and colorful petals.

The Tie Bar: What is it about florals that really inspires you as an artist?

KV: I think I’m really inspired by florals and nature, just the variety of shapes and colors and kind of, like, unexpected wildness of it all.

TTB: When you see your products on ties or pocket squares or anything else, how does that feel?

KV: It will never get old to see a pattern come to life on a product. That was true 15 years ago when I first started designing in housewares and to today seeing it in people’s walls and in their homes. Just seeing how it transforms a space in someone’s life is an exciting thing.

TTB: How do you see florals as an important part of fashion?

KV: I think florals are often labeled as feminine, but I don’t see them that way. I think they’re a part of everyday. Nature is part of everyday, and it’s fun to see that incorporated into people’s lifestyles and their fashion.
