What Tie Knot Do the Royals Use?

Want a tie knot fit for royalty? The right choice exudes elegance and formality. Discover which knot the royals favor and how to achieve the look.

Regal, elegant, and formal, the knot most associated with the royals is the Windsor Knot. Although today's royals may use a range of necktie knots for various occasions, when formal attire is worn, you'll see them donning a Windsor knot.

If you'll be attending a formal event or a high-profile gathering, a Windsor knot will elevate your style. With 7 steps, this Windsor knot tutorial will show you exactly how to achieve a perfect knot. In the steps below, "blade" refers to the wide part of the tie, and "tail" refers to the narrow part.

  1. Cross the wide blade over the narrow tail, with about 12" of the blade longer than the tail.
  2. Bring the blade up under the tail to the collar.
  3. Bring the blade back down over and then under the tail.
  4. Bring the blade behind the knot and pull it through the top of the neck loop.
  5. Bring the blade across the front of the knot.
  6. Pull the blade through the bottom of the neck loop.
  7. Pull the blade through the front of the knot and adjust until the knot is fully symmetrical.
