Do you find it tricky to get your tie proportion just right? Even the most beautiful ties can detract from your appearance if they hang too low past your belt or are too short and skimpy.
Obviously, not all men are exactly 6 feet tall. Men with a muscular build, taller men, and even men who are on the shorter side of the spectrum all find it challenging to get their tie length in proper proportion to their body type.
If you're one of those men who's challenged with tie length, this guide will help you achieve the perfect tie fit. We'll help you measure accurately to ensure your tie isn't too short or too long — but just right!

Understanding Tie Length Basics
Did you know the average tie length ranges from 57 " to 58"? That means that if you're a taller or shorter man, it's likely your tie is going to seem out of proportion unless you take tie length into account when making your choice.
The length of your tie affects the overall look of your appearance. A tie that hangs too low can look sloppy and a tie that is too short will look skimpy. Use our tie sizing guide for more information on tie length basics.
Factors Affecting Ideal Tie Length
Your height, body type, and knot style preference all affect the proportion of your tie. Fortunately, The Tie Bar’s ties come in three lengths to accommodate these factors. So it's best to measure from your collar to belt buckle to get an accurate idea of how long your tie should be.
How to Measure for the Perfect Tie Length
Ready to take measurements so the ties you buy will be the perfect length? Simply follow this step-by-step measurement guide.
Tools You'll Need
- A flexible measuring tape. A yard stick or rigid measurement tool won't give you accurate results. Use a flexible tape.
- A well-fitting dress shirt. The excess fabric of a bulky dress shirt will distort the measurements. The same goes for a tight-fitting dress shirt. Measure over a shirt that fits you properly.
- Pants and a belt. Why? Because you'll need to tuck in your shirt and the measurement will end at the middle of your belt buckle. This will avoid guesstimating.
- A full-length mirror will provide the best viewpoint as you measure. If you measure in front of a bathroom mirror, your midsection may be cut off.
- Pencil and paper or your phone to write down and save the measurements.
Step-by-Step Measurement Guide
- Put on a well-fitting dress shirt, tuck it into your pants, and buckle your belt.
- Button all the buttons of your shirt, including the top button.
- Stand straight in front of a full-length mirror.
- Measure from the top button of your collar to where you want the tip of the tie to end. This is usually at the middle of your belt buckle.
- Add 2 to 3 inches extra to the measurement for a standard knot. Record this measurement.

Tie Length Guidelines for Different Heights
This guide will help you choose a tie length based on your height:
Short Ties (Under 57 Inches)
If you're under 5' 7", a short tie will be the best choice for you.
Standard Ties (57-58 Inches)
The best tie length for men between 5"7" and 6' 1" is the standard length. Ties in standard length are from 57" to 58" long.
Extra Long Ties (Over 58 Inches)
Over 6' 1" tall? Shop for ties that are labeled extra long. These ties are over 58" in length and will give you those extra few inches to achieve the correct proportion for your height.

How Different Knots Affect Tie Length
Formal, complex knots take up additional tie length. If you prefer a formal knot, add about 5 additional inches to the length of the tie you buy. This guide on how to tie different knots will help you learn about the tie length required for various tie knots.
Common Tie Knots and Their Impact on Length
- Four-in Hand Knot: The versatile, asymmetrical, easy-to-tie Four-in-Hand knot takes the least amount of fabric to tie. This is an excellent knot for very tall men. The Four-in-Hand is the best knot to use when tying heavy fabrics or textured ties like wool or silk knits.
- Half Windsor Knot: Using a little more fabric than the four-in-hand, the Half Windsor knot is a symmetrical knot that has a slightly more formal appearance. It works with many different collar styles and types.
- Full Windsor Knot: The Full Windsor knot is the preferred knot for formal occasions and works best with spread collar dress shirts. It is a wide, symmetrical knot, triangular in shape and requires a significant amount of fabric. You'll need from 4 to 6 extra inches of length to tie a Full Windsor knot.
Tips for Achieving the Perfect Tie Length
To achieve the perfect tie length every time:
- Follow the measuring guide above so you'll know the best length tie to buy for your body type and height.
