Remembering Bob Newhart: A Chicago Legend and Timeless Comedian

Comedian and actor Bob Newhart passed away at the age of 94 Thursday, July 18th and left behind a legacy of television fashion and Chicago pride.
Born in Oak Park, Newhart attended St. Ignatius Prep and graduated from Loyola University Chicago with a business degree in 1952. Over the years, Newhart has been honored in the Windy City with a statue at Navy Pier and a plaque in the Edgewater neighborhood.
The intro to his eponymous 1970s sitcom “The Bob Newhart Show,” featuring Newhart in a sleek red tie, shows his character commuting home along the Chicago River, past the Marina Towers and all the way to his Edgewater apartment.

His follow-up show “Newhart” in the ‘80s further cemented Newhart’s place in silver screen history with one of the most beloved twist finales of all time.

Through the decades, Newhart’s characters evolved with the changing fashion world. Whether he was playing a Chicago psychiatrist or Vermont-based author, Newhart was always sporting the perfect tie, Barrymore collar or cardigan for the occasion.
