Are Weddings Always Black Tie?

Not all weddings are black tie! Learn about different wedding dress codes from formal to casual and what to wear for each occasion.

Not all weddings are black tie. Wedding dress codes vary widely, but no matter the level of formality, your look should be polished. Here's a basic attire guide for wedding dress codes:

  • Black Tie: A black or midnight blue tuxedo, white tuxedo shirt, black bow tie, and patent leather dress shoes.
  • Black Tie Optional: Wear either a tuxedo with a black bow tie or a dark suit with a plain, subtly colored silk tie.
  • Formal: Formal attire requires a dark suit, white dress shirt, and a subtly colored silk tie. Avoid bright colors and bold patterns.
  • Semi-Formal: Men can wear anything from a dark suit and tie to dress slacks and a blazer. With semi-formal attire, your tie can make more of a statement than with formal wear.
  • Cocktail Attire: Wear a suit or blazer with dress pants, a dress shirt, and an optional tie. Cocktail attire allows outfits with brighter, bolder colors.
  • Themed or Casual Attire: Select accessories that align with the theme. For example, for a beach wedding, wear a light linen suit or a tropical pattern silk shirt with slacks. For a barn wedding, wear great-fitting jeans, a cowboy shirt, and boots.
    • For a casual wedding, wear a collarless linen shirt and chinos or pair a button-down with slacks. Remember that themed weddings are not asking for costume party attire. Keep your ensemble handsome and polished!
